Focus 15: Locating Grant Resources

One of the greatest challenges facing consumer organizations is finding the resources they need to do the important work they want to do in their communities. An organization might have a clearly defined mission and committed leadership, but where do they find the financial support to make their vision a reality?

The CAFE TA Center is going to be sharing some tips on how to find those resources in the next few issues of our Focus newsletter. The latest edition, Focus 15, offers information on seeking grants. It answers some basic questions, like “What is a grant?” and “What are the pros and cons of grant funding?” It also includes answers on one of the most prevalent questions, “Where do you find grants?”

The CAFE TA Center is pleased to share its newest online training, Emerging Adults on Governance Boards. By including emerging adults, consumer organizations can make their commitment to welcoming a new generation of leaders clear, while also creating a meaningful role for those emerging adults that can help them to feel involved and empowered.

Emerging Adults on Governance Boards offers insight into the benefits of including youth and emerging adults on the Boards of consumer organizations, and provides information on recruiting emerging adult leaders, creating a welcoming environment for them and integrating their perspectives into consumer organizations.

The CAFE TAC’s latest Focus newsletter explores the idea of having emerging adults participate on the Boards of consumer peer organizations. Generally speaking, most consumer organizations want to grow and thrive, while also making sure that their Board reflects the population that they serve. One way to groom future leaders while building an inclusive organization is to include youth and emerging adults with behavioral health needs on the Boards of Directors of consumer organizations.

The new Focus examines the growing trend of emerging adult Board participation, reviews some of the rules and guidelines for Boards of Directors, and offers some tips on how to include youth and emerging adults. Check it out here!

Alternatives is the nation’s leading national conference by and for individuals with behavioral health needs. This year marks the 26th Alternatives, making it the longest running national mental health conference organized by and for mental health consumers/survivors.

This year’s Alternatives will be held in Portland, Oregon at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront on October 10-14, 2012. This year’s theme is “Honoring Our History, Building Our Future.” The theme reflects honoring the efforts and achievements of the past while embracing and supporting the growth of new programs and services.

The CAFE TA Center has just published a new resource to help individuals with mental illnesses be prepared to take care of themselves in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. Disasters can be extremely disruptive, challenging and trauma-inducing for anyone. For those with mental health needs, losing access to services and supports can make things even more difficult. Bridging the Gap: Reaching Out to Emerging Adults
