SAMHSA Is Seeking Comments on a New Unified Application for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Block Grants
SAMHSA announces a new approach for the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant (SAPTBG) and the Community Mental Health Services Block Grant (MHSBG). Under this new approach, the grant applications will merge, providing states and territories the opportunity to use block grant dollars for prevention, recovery supports, and other services that supplement services covered by Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance. The block grant funds will be directed to four purposes: Fund priority treatment and support services for individuals without insurance or for whom coverage is terminated for short periods of time. Alternatives 2011 Call for Papers Available
Alternatives, the national conference created by and for mental health consumers, will be held at the Caribe Royale Hotel in Orlando, Florida this coming October 26-30. The event is designed to provide consumers with in-depth information on peer-delivered services, innovative paths to recovery and other issues related to consumer leadership in supporting our nation’s mental health and well-being. Alternatives 2011 is being hosted and organized by the National Mental Health Consumers’ Self-Help Clearinghouse, a peer-run national technical assistance center funded by SAMHSA. SAMHSA Outlines New Strategic Initiatives
SAMHSA has just released its strategic initiatives paper that will provide a road map for its goals and activities in the next four years. You can download the paper as a pdf by following this link. SAMHSA has developed this plan with extensive input from a wide range of stakeholders, including consumers and the groups that serve and support them. The end result is this paper, which details how SAMHSA will bring federal resources to bear in its efforts to meet the behavioral health challenges currently emerging nationwide. The CAFÉ TA Center is a program of The Family Café, a cross-disability organization that has been connecting individuals with information, training and resources since 1998. The Center is supported by SAMHSA to operate one of its five national technical assistance centers; providing technical assistance, training, and resources that facilitate the restructuring of the mental health system through effective consumer directed approaches for adults with serious mental illnesses across the country.

Consumers in the community need the right knowledge and tools to effectively organize, speak for themselves, and thrive in their daily lives.
